Absolute Total Health & Fitness, LLC
(Mental, Emotional, Nutritional, Physical & Spiritual)

My Mission
Hi, my name is Melissa McCall-Owen. I am the owner of Absolute Total Health & Fitness since 2001. I am a Transylvania County resident, local born and raised here. I am married with children to my husband, Mark. I love nature, animals (especially dogs), camping, ATVs, biking, exercise, music (playing bass), good food and helping others. My Mission is to help others, but we believe that the body has to be balanced emotionally, mentally nutritionally, structurally, physically and each individual spiritual journey being met to have a totally healthy body.
The Full Story
As a little girl, I remember my mother working as a Naturopathic Holistic Doctor and going to school and seminars. I grew up seeing her on cleanses, fasting, doing all kinds of natural modalities and our family ate very healthy. I always remembered thinking we were different from other families when I went to visit my friends. My Mom would travel and see patients, and everyone would come to our house when they were sick or experiencing an illness.
When I married, my mother got her first main office in Franklin, NC and I realized that she was the first certified Naturopathic Doctor in Transylvania County. She always worked out and ran and was very athletic. As I became an adult, I went to school for business and finance because I saw how much she cared about others, and she would worry a lot. She has such a kind heart that she could never turn anyone away, so money and finances were not always good. As I went through the banking world and moved up in the chain of command, I realized that I had picked a good career for income. I later went into Real Estate and as I ended my twenties, I had become quite successful as a single mother raising 2 children alone. I was very happy with my choices and my mother continued to help all people from different incomes with different issues and disabilities through a natural route.
Then as I turned 29, my daughter was diagnosed with a brain disorder and a learning disability. I soon turned to my mother, Dr. Josephine Owen, for guidance on how to help her. The medical world just wanted to medicate her, and they really didn't help her. I left behind everything that I knew and had built for myself and my children and went into business with my mother in 2001. My mother left her office in Franklin to work with me in Asheville, NC. Putting my business and finance skills to work with the front office and as her assistant, we grew into a 3200 square foot business, with many forms of natural testing and modalities to get well holistically. I felt the kind of passion and desire to help patients that she had always shown. I had never felt that kind of peace and satisfaction working at the bank and the real estate company as I did when a cancer patient smiled and said thank You! This was in 2001. Our journey took us to seminars all over the US, Canada and Hawaii.
My mother believed that "Total Health" was achieved by adding the nutritional and all the modalities of Bio and Neuro feedback, cleanses, colonics, nutrition, infra-red light, Homeopathic, Herbs, vitamin therapies, and much more to her patients. When I joined her, we added the mental and emotional therapies to our practice. In 2013 we finally moved our office to Brevard, NC where we both were local and resided. My mother decided to leave the business and spend more time with my dad and I was forced to downsize. We sold a lot of our equipment, and I pursued education in personal training, group exercise and medical exercise science therapy. As I added those to the list, I believed that I had the total package to address illness in a holistic way. By addressing the nutritional, emotional, physical and spiritual body, the body could heal itself better than western medicine could. I also believed that western medicine could work hand in hand with Eastern medicine if a Medical Doctor would be willing to let me work as a referral.
I renamed the clinic from Total Health Center to Absolute Total Health & Fitness and moved into my own smaller space. I took the clinic nationwide in 2018 and then Covid 19 hit our town pretty badly. I was closed down for 12 months but realized I could do phone and zoom meetings from my home office. I made it through the Covid 19 period and was able to stay in business when so many practitioners around us went
After Covid, I regrouped and met my now secretary/coordinator, and we decided to move into an office and try to rebuild the practice. I missed my mother and all of her knowledge and experience, but I knew that she needed time to enjoy life and spend time with my dad, so I went forward with the things that I knew. The nutrition side of the business turned into a diet for weight-loss, and the Dash, Mediterranean and the Healthy Low Carb Diets turned into the Healthy Heart and diabetes program. Fasting and cleansing is now a short-term program for detox. The emotional and mental wellness side of the business sored with the Neuro-Emotional Therapy, color, sound, tap and other therapies including yoga stretch, meditation and prayer became one of the most popular appointments. The physical fitness, group classes and medical exercise therapies were as popular because fitness helps with every aspect of health. Structural issues are tested by AK for emotional attachments and then referred to other health practitioners. Spiritual appointments and prayer is available but not pushed on anyone. We are here for all people of all beliefs without any discrimination or judgement.
As we celebrate 2 years in our new office, we believe in Absolute Total Health and Fitness' approach for the entire mind/body to be in balance and heal itself. Please look through our new site as we have tried to be specific in what we now do. My mission since 2001 has been to be patient, compassionate, humble, helpful and loving to those that are in need of a doctor, therapist, life coach, trainer, instructor, and a loving friend. My desire is to help others. I Thank my mom for showing me how to help and care for others.
